First Annual Youth Summit to take place at UMRC

River Action and River Action's Youth Advisory Board, along with their sponsors, are hosting the first annual Upper Mississippi River Conference Youth Summit. The Youth Summit takes place on Wednesday, September 21st, 4:30pm, at the Isle of Capri Convention Center in Bettendorf, Iowa. Registration is free.

Join us as we discuss different topics relevant for the Mississippi River today. Speakers range from human impacts on waterways to invasive species. Network with other students and professionals at the catfish fry and throughout the summit. Learn more about the issues you care about and what role you play in the river ecosystem.

The evening begins with a kick-off presentation from our keynote speaker, Brian Soenen, natural resource biologist and coordinator of the Iowa Department of Natural Resource's Project A.W.A.R.E. Soenen will present on “Cleanup Culture - Environmental Stewardship for the Next Generation".

Featured speakers for UMRC 2011

Larry Larson P.E. CFM, Executive Director, Association of State Floodplain Managers, will be the keynote speaker. His talk is entitled “Community Resilience in the Face of Increasing Storm Intensity and Flooding."

Terry Eastin, Executive Director, Mississippi River Trail, Inc., will be speaking on “Ten States, Countless Communities: Building the Mississippi River Trail."

Pat Nunnally, Coordinator, River Life Partnership, Institute on the Environment (IonE), University of Minnesota will speak on “Minneapolis Bridge Collapse: Before, During and After"

Three planning charrettes part of conference activities

Conference attendees will participate in roundtable charrettes addressing river communities' needs. All Upper Mississippi River stakeholders are invited to attend.
