Adopt-a-Path
As the recreational trail system expands in the Quad Cities, more volunteers are needed to help keep these trails clean and safe for all.
As of October 2025, there are currently three different recreational trail projects underway in Davenport alone. These include the West Loop Trail, the Goose Creek Connector Trail, and the Veterans Memorial Parkway Connector Trail. Multiple sections of trail are being added in Bettendorf (IA), and Moline (IL) as well. Bettendorf is adding the Gateway Bridge Trail Extension and Moline is adding the Mississippi River to Rock River Trail. All these trail extensions require a larger number of volunteers needed to help keep our trails clean. By utilizing the Adopt-A-Path Program, these trails can be kept clean and safe for cyclists, walkers, runners, and all the many people who use these paths. This volunteer program is an informal agreement whereby citizens, organizations, local businesses, and student groups help
Volunteer duties include:
- Pick up small items of litter along the path.
- The area to be kept clean would just be the immediate path and buffer areas; don’t go down to the water’s edge or into ditches.
- If large items are found, do not feel like you must pick them up. Give River Action or your City Parks/Public Works Department a call.
- You do not have to sweep the path or shovel mud or dirt from it.
- Use your own garbage bags, or come down to the River Action office and pick up a supply. We also have gloves!
- Dispose of your collected litter in a city trash receptacle or at your home. If there are many bags (or very heavy ones), give River Action a call and we can arrange for them to be picked up. Please leave these in an area where they would be easily accessed by motorized vehicles.
- Pick up your section as often as you can (again, this is subjective). You do not have to do it weekly or even monthly. A potential guideline would be at least every two months during the spring to fall season – in other words, four to five times a year.
- Occasionally give us a call, e-mail us or stop into the office and tell us how you or your group are doing.
- Look for your name on the Adopt-A-Path page on the River Action website.
