From December 2008-2009, River Action and Conservation Design Forum, a multidisciplinary consulting firm facilitated planning meetings on the Duck Creek and Rock River Watersheds with a planning Committee of municipal public works, parks and planning departments, county, state and federal agencies, local professionals, professors, environmental groups, and the general public.
The final product was two plans-The Rock River and The Duck Creek Watershed Plan which included the inventory and analysis done on the watershed, issues and concerns with the watershed, goals for improvement and prioritized recommendations for making those improvements.
The committee and the plans identify a need for awareness and education and in-the-ground projects to solve concerns in the watersheds.

Getting to the “root” of concerns with Duck Creek
River Action is teaming up with the Cities of Davenport and Bettendorf to make the Duck Creek and its tributaries as enjoyable for habitat as it is for residents! Through the help of in-kind services from the cities and funding received by River Action from the Watershed Improvement Review Board of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship some of the areas where lawn and scrub brush exists now will be replaced with native grasses and wildflowers. These new plantings will provide food and homes for wildlife such as birds and butterflies and be a beautiful addition to the parkway. As well, the deep roots of these native plants will filter pollutants before they reach the stream, absorb and reduce stormwater and stabilize banks helping reduce further erosion.
In addition to funding for the filter strips of native grasses and wildflower, River Action has funding form the Watershed Improvement Review Board of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship to provide educational opportunities.
